Social audit training under NREGA concludes at Dhemaji

Dhemaji, August 28, 2008: The innovative feature of the National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (NREGA) is that it gives a central role to ‘social audit’ as a means of continuous public vigilance.

As per Section 17 of NREGA, the gram sabha shall conduct regular social audits of all the projects under the scheme taken up within the gram panchayat.

In Dhemaji district, social audit has been conducted by holding gram sabha periodically. To ensure regular social audit of all the scheme executed under NREGA in the district, the DRDA of Dhemaji in collaboration with SIRD of Khanapara, conducted a two-day high-level training programme on August 6 and 7 at the DRDA Training Hall Dhemaji on social audit under NREGA to impart training to the district, block and panchayat level officials and non-official members of the social audit forum of the district.

About 200 officials and non-official members participated in the training programme. Pabitra Kalita, faculty member of SIRD, Khanapara and two eminent personalities of the nation on social audit & RTI, Bolram, state adviser to the commissioner of Supreme Court, Ranchi Gharkhand and Gurjit Sing, president of Bharat Gnan-Vignan Samiti, imparted training on social audit as resource persons.

This training programme on social audit under NREGA was organised by the DRDA of Dhemaji with national-level resource persons and was conducted for the first time in Dhemaji district of the State. The two-days training programme was inaugurated by Dr P Ashok Babu, deputy commissioner of Dhemaji and the welcome address was delivered by Jitendra Nath Pegu, project director of DRDA, Dhemaji.

After the valedictory session of the training programme, a press meet was held at the DRDA conference hall with members of the Press Club of Dhemaji on the issue of various welfare and development schemes executed in the district.

The DRDA authority resolved that after this high-level intensive training on social audit, brisk preparation will be made to evolve a model of social audit for the district and to conduct social audit of all the schemes executed under NREGA within August and September during the current year.
