Whiff of AMD man’s role in ‘uranium’ trade

Shillong, September 8, 2008: In a twist to the recent recovery of uranium ore from a Rangbah Shnong and his accomplice, it was revealed by two more arrested persons that they procured the radioactive material from the son of an employee of the Atomic Mineral Division (AMD) office at Nongmynsong here.

Speaking to The Shillong Times on Monday, police sources said two more persons had been arrested last week in connection with the seizure of packets containing uranium from Mairang, West Khasi Hills recently.

They have been identified as Jlington Kharjahrin from Nongstoin and Dispillar Iawphniaw from Wahkaji.

During interrogation, Dispillar confessed that he received the uranium packet from one J Thongni of Phlangdiloin in West Khasi Hills whose father Iustar Sangriang is an employee of the Atomic Mineral Division (AMD) at Nongmynsong, Shillong.

However, police said they were in search of the AMD employee and his son.

Earlier, police had arrested Samuel Nongmalieh, Rangbah Shnong of Lumkya village in Ri-Bhoi district and Starwell Kurbah of Mairang after recovering the packets from the residence of the latter.

Meanwhile, the packets have been sent for test.
