Central expert takes stock of new paddy plantation system
Dec 15th, 2008 | By neitham | Category: Assam | Email |NALBARI, Dec 14, 2008 – The director of rice under National Food Security Mission (NFSM) in New Delhi, MC Dibakar, recently visited the paddy fields of Nalbari district to take stock of the progress of the newly-introduced System of Rice Intensification (SRI).
He also interacted with the farmers to share the experiences of this new system of rice production. The Central expert also discussed with the district-level officials of the Agriculture department to get the feedback on the technique.
The NFSM director first visited the paddy fields of Mani Ram Das of Karia village and got satisfactory result of the rice intensification system. In this new SRI method, eight- to 12-day-old rice seedlings are planted in lines which reduce the quantity of seeds and increase production.
While speaking to this correspondent, Dibakar said that with this new method, the farmers will double production than in the ongoing traditional method. He added that in Assam 13 districts have been covered by this new system of rice intensification which is being implemented since 2007-08. According to him, the State government despite the limited infrastructure has got better result in the demonstration phase and it will help the government and farmers in surplus rice production. Dibakar also stressed on the importance of expansion of this system to more areas to give better production to the farmer families. He expected that the State will get self-sufficient in food grains by organising the National Food Security Mission. Regarding Nalbari district the director said that the farmers doing the system of rice intensification in right direction for which they succeed to get high yield in Ranjit and Swarnamachury variety. The system will boost up the production of rice in this flood-prone district, he added.
The director of National Food Security Mission, MC Dibakar was accompanied by the additional director of agriculture A Islam, district agriculture officer (DAO), subdivisional agriculture officer (SDAO), among others.
