ITANAGAR, June 4, 2009 – A new FCI regional office was inaugurated here recently fulfilling a long-pending demand of the people of Arunachal Pradesh.

The office started functioning from yesterday.

The State which had so long depended on the FCI regional office at Guwahati, will now have better management of distribution of essential items including foodgrains after the Dorji Khandu Government started streamlining the public distribution system (PDS) which remained collapsed for some years in the wake of a multi-crore scam.

Khandu, who took the reins of the State after dislodging Gegong Apang In 2007, promised to revamp the PDS to ensure food security for the people, especially those residing in remote areas of the hilly State and got several FCI depots established well inside the State, official sources said.

Inaugurating the FCI Regional Office, Minister of Food and Civil Supplies C C Singpho termed the moment as a red letter day for the State and assured FCI all support and cooperation from the government for its proper functioning.

Director Food and Civil Supplies B Siram, speaking on the occasion, highlighted the problems faced in proper distribution of PDS items in the hilly border State with poor road connectivity.
