Sikkim reserves 85% seats for weaker sections in local bodies

GANGTOK, June 11, 2009 – In an effort to empower the weaker sections, the Sikkim government has decided to reserve 85 per cent of seats for them in panchayats and urban self-government bodies.

The decision in this regard was taken yesterday at a Cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling.

Under the new reservation policy, the indigenous tribal communities – Bhutia and Lepcha, popularly known as BL – have been granted 22 per cent seats in the panchayat and urban bodies, while 21 per cent seats have been reserved for the MBCs and OBCs each, according to an official release.

The people from the Scheduled Tribes and Scheduled Castes have got 14 per cent and seven per cent reservation respectively in the local bodies, while 40 per cent quota for women will remain unchanged, it said.
